Jack Johnson
To celebrate our 3 year wedding anniversary, Sarah and I went to see Jack Johnson in concert at the Nokia Theater in Grand Prairie. Neither of us had been to a show at the Nokia, but we had both heard it described as "incredible" and "amazing"... I was not impressed. The Nokia Theater is pretty big (6,350 seats) and our seats were so high up I had to stuff tissue in my nose to stop the bleeding. Jack looked like an ant, and the video screens on either side of the stage were blurry and dark. With that being said, I wasn't there to SEE Jack Johnson, I was there to HEAR him... This is what disappointed me the most. The sound engineer for the show needs to be shot. The volume as a whole was not anywhere near loud enough. We could barely hear his vocals, and this jackass behind us kept talking through every song. I've never been to a concert like that where I actually wanted them to turn it UP!
Maybe I'm biased because I spent my youth going to see my favorite bands play in small, run-down bars and clubs that held 500 people at most. I'd rather see an intimate performance in a dingy bar that makes my ears bleed than sit in an architectural marvel with 9 thousand people strug-u-ling to hear the music... But that's just me.
Apparently, no one else in our section had ever heard of Jack Johnson... No one stood up, no one sang along, no one was even bobbing their heads. At one point, I thought everyone around us had fallen asleep except for that annoying ass kid that sat behind us talking the ENTIRE time. Why even bother going to a concert if your not going to listen to the music?
So enough bitching already. Venue aside, it really was a great performance. Jack Johnson and his band played without flaw and busted out all his greatest songs... I just wish we could've heard it better. I also discovered a great band called ALO. The frontman is Jack Johnson's piano/keyboard player. They were funky cool hip cats - I encourage you to check them out.
